I've wondered if a helpful pattern on these might be:

	bool agcEnable = controls.get(controls::AeEnable)
				 .value_or(agc.autoEnabled);
	if (agcEnable != agc.autoEnabled) {
		agc.autoEnabled = agcEnable;
		LOG(...)
	}

But it's not specifically better than what you have.
