Do we want metadata to be passed in as argument, or do we want
metadata to be part of the frame context ?

Also, a reference is nice, but we usually use pointers for modifiable
arguments. Just pointing out for sake of consistency (I'm not even
sure we actually enforce that anymore), I'm fine with a reference
too..
